Uses

I thought the idea of a /uses page was an interesting one, though I'm not a very technical person and so there's not much of a tech stack here. Honestly I like my tech to be minimal and get out of my way. Sometimes I'm in the mood to tinker, but when I'm not in the mood for it, I get frustrated really fast. Then I throw everything out and start over.

That's why I've gone through so many SSGs, haha. As soon as something breaks and I can't figure out why, I'm half inclined to start from scratch with my pile of markdown files. Which I suppose is the entire benefit of SSGs and markdown; I have the luxury to do that.

Website

  • Code: I end up doing a lot of my editing in plain text editors since I work in markdown files. Right now I'm using ghostwriter but I've used the basic text editor that came with Linux and I've even edited my website files right in Obsidian when they're adjacent to my notes. I'm using Bestatic as an SSG and I've used 11ty in the past for building out a few portions of my site as well.
  • Graphics: I end up doing a lot of graphic editing in Canva because it's fast and convenient.

Writing

  • Ellipsus for long-form writing. Does it make me anxious that it doesn't have an offline backup option? Yeah it does. Do I use it anyway? Sure do. Nothing's perfect, but when it's working smoothly I really like it. It lets me give stuff to someone to beta with minimal fuss, and it's pleasant to write in, and I like that it gives me the option to export already formatted for the AO3.
  • Blogging: I'm split across Tumblr, Dreamwidth and weblog.lol because I'm not 100% in love with any of the options. What I'd like is to be able to bring over the archives of my old wordpress blog, going back to 2007 or so, but I don't know whether that's really worth the effort.

Art

  • For most of my digital art I use Procreate on an super basic iPad. I don't use anything terribly fancy as far as the tools go: a knockoff pencil that cost less than $20 and a paperlike screen protector.
  • If you're interested in learning Procreate with a live teacher online, I'd recommend the classes at Crucial Comix. I did their intermediate Procreate class and got a ton out of it.
  • My favorite reference sources are collected on my art list.
  • If I can't find a good reference or I need something cleaner to figure out what I'm doing, I have Magic Poser on the iPad and I find it fairly easy to use, if a little fiddly. I paid the one-time fee for the first upgrade level because I thought it was worth that but I haven't tried the monthly subscription so I can't say if I think that's worth it.

Tech

  • OS: Linux because I'm just familiar enough with stuff to be frustrated with Windows' limitations. Instead I get to be frustrated with my own limitations in using the command line.
  • Monitors: Two, because I started using two at work and it's completely ruined me for just having one now.
  • Browser: Waterfox
  • Email: Fastmail to host my domain emails
